Student Advocacy and Change with Harrison and Mya
Superintendent Patrick Malley sits down with Harrison and Mya, two Haslett High School seniors and co-presidents of the high school Sustainability Club. Both got their start in Bridget Booth's eighth grade Conservation Club. They now help lead sustainability work across the district, including the effort that made all five Haslett schools certified Michigan Green Schools.
In this episode:
- How Mrs. Booth, family members, and the news drew them into sustainability work
- Paper birds on the glass corridor and weekly tree checks, the small projects that made big problems feel manageable
- Teaching Earth Club lessons to elementary students at Murphy and Ralya
- Walking into the Capitol as high school students for a day of action on clean energy
- Helping teachers in every building complete their Michigan Green School applications
- What they have learned about getting adults to change something, from compostable lunch trays to cardboard dumpsters
- How much their classmates care about sustainability, and why
- What adults get wrong about cell phones and social media
- How students are using AI, and where it helps
- What they want to leave behind at Haslett when they graduate
Mya: "No age group is less knowledgeable than another."
The conversation closes with the Lightning Five.
